In Michigan you get The Wine Gypsy, the unique and affordable creation of Ann Arbor musician Kitty Donohoe, who will provide you with a lovely evening of entertainment and wine. Kitty brings her guitar and 10 wines from Sandhill Crane Vineyards (out of Jackson) to you, where she sings and pours samples, explaining the nuances of each one. Your guests then have the opportunity of ordering the wines they like directly from Kitty, who will deliver them to you within days of the party. Making appearances all over lower Michigan – from barbecues to fundraisers to birthday soirees and beyond – the Wine Gypsy brings the party to you.

Winter 2013

We’re in the deep-freeze right now here in lower Michigan. The vineyards may be stark and snow-covered, but several wines are working away in the cellar, waiting to be bottled.

Many palates crave deep reds at this time of year, but for those of us who always love a good white, the 2011 Seyval Blanc serves the purpose beautifully. A sweet-tart lemony essence gets rounded out by the grapefruit notes for a full white that pairs well with fish and seafood.

The 2009 Proprietor’s Reserve Chancellor is back, until it’s gone again! The Gold-Medal winner is an unfiltered red made with estate-grown Chancellor grapes. It’s a rich, velvety wine with ripe, juicy plum on the nose with hints of nuttiness and minerality. Will cellar well - limit 2 bottles.

Two more fun reds, which are related to each other...Night of the Living Red and Revenge of the Living Red. Brought out every year at Halloween, NLR is a semi-sweet red seasoned with cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla & orange peel. A perfect balance. It’s cousin ‘Revenge’ has the addition of hot peppers - really! Not too much, just enough to feel the warmth move down your tongue. Both of these wines are perfect warmed in a crock-pot on a cold day. No need to add anything but your friends.

As the earth begins to tilt toward the sun again and sap slowly rises in the trees, local sugar bushes are getting set for another season of mapling. Sugar Snow is a Michigan born and bred dessert wine made of local maple sap, sweetened with maple syrup, and fortified with grape spirits. Think of adding it to your oatmeal before you head out on your ski’s. Quite unique.
